For over 77 years the Alliance has made a difference. The Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society Alliance (SSVMSA) is composed of physicians' spouses and domestic partners, physicians, residents, medical students and Friends of the Alliance supporters. In association with the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society we are dedicated to improving the quality of health in our community through funding, volunteer support and education.
Maybe you know of someone helped by the Alliance:
- A wife whose husband is a recovering stroke patient found help through the Community Resources for Older Adults directory that the Alliance publishes each year.
- A nursing student is grateful for the financial assistance provided through the Alliance Scholarship Program.
- An 8 year old, after working through an "I Can Choose" workbook, learned to resolve disagreements without yelling and shoving.
- Families watched "Sounding the Alarm: Diabetes in the Valley" on PBS partially funded by an Alliance grant.
Margaret Mead, Anthropologist, said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." In 2009, our successes included:
- Granting a total of $26,100 to five local agencies.
- Donating toys and games to two schools for Turn off the Violence TV Free Week.
- Co-sponsoring a Community Health Day with Sutter Health entitled "Stroke and Heart Disease: Women are Different" that included dynamic, expert speakers and provided health information.
- Distributing 25,000 of our Community Resources for Older Adults booklets in association with UC Davis Medical Center.
- Raising $14,800 for the AMA Foundation for Medical School Support, the William E. Dochterman Scholarship Fund and the SSVMSA Community Endowment Fund.
- Collecting and shipping used medical textbooks and equipment for a medical school in Kabul, Afghanistan.
- Organizing three social events for physicians and their families to help promote camaraderie and increase awareness of the Medical Society and the Alliance.
